“Choosing the days and hours you want to work is something that most people could only dream of”
“My biggest regret is wasting several years of my precious life that are now irreplaceable stuck in a job that made me unhappy, I just wish I’d have done it sooner” – M Durrant (driving instructor)
“There are few occupations where you receive such a buzz and personal satisfaction when you help and prepare a student to pass their driving test. This will quite often be the biggest moment of their lives so far and one they will always remember”
Becoming a driving instructor allows you to be in control of your life and your future. Choosing the days and hours you want to work is something that most people will never have the luxury of.
There could be many reasons as to why you are exploring the possibility of a new career change. You may have become demoralised with your current job and feel that you are not fulfilling your full potential. Maybe you feel like another number, who is primarily lining the pockets of your boss, with little or no gratitude. You could even be faced with the dreaded threat of redundancy.
When I initially looked into leaving my last employment, my job search was quickly met with the realisation that in order to maintain the lifestyle that I had at that time, I was going to have to invest into a career that was skilled and required training – either that or accept earning around the minimum wage which I wasn’t prepared to do.
I had always enjoyed my driving and made the decision to invest in some training and become my own boss as a driving instructor. I have since been rewarded for my efforts and it has proved to be life changing. In fact, it’s the best decision I’ve ever made (see my video above).
My reason for putting together this instructor training website is to help give you an insight into exactly what it’s really like working as a driving instructor in Derby. There is generally very little independent information available for research on such a major career decision such as this one. I have tried to include the information in an unbiased way that will help you explore the options available to you, both for choosing your instructor training provider and for actually working as a driving instructor once fully qualified. I hope the information can it help you to make an informed decision either way.
Matthew Durrant – (ADI & driving school owner)
“I’d suggest these four steps to assist you in making sure that your decision is the correct one”
1. Order a copy of my 50 page book. You will then be able to read the case studies from driving instructors who talk about why they came into this industry and how it has changed and their lives. They also give their thoughts on the pros and cons of the job.
2. Arrange a meet up with myself. I assure you that there won’t be any high pressure sales pitch. You’ll also get a feel for whether you can see us working together as I’m also head of our instructor training programme and will be conducting the training sessions.
3. Ask every single question you can think of and I will give you a very honest answer. Being a local business, it is crucial that we are open and honest with you as we live and operate virtually on your doorstep.
4. Research what other training companies have to offer and you will then be able to make an informed comparison.
